Greenery Day Poster
For this project, my goal was to create an animated poster for a holiday of my choosing from any country besides the United States. After doing some research, I chose to design a poster for the Japanese holiday "Greenery Day." Greenery Day is celebrated as a day to appreciate nature and be grateful for its blessings. This is a day that people in Japan spend reflecting in nature and often volunteering their time to plant trees or help out the environment in one way or another. I wanted my design to reflect the style and content used in Japanese art but remain unique.
It All Starts With Sketches...
From the beginning of this project, I knew I wanted the design to reflect the symbolism used in traditional Japanese woodblock prints, but feel unique and new. After finding visual inspiration, I put away my laptop and began creating lots of thumbnail sketches from my imagination. This helped me find an organic composition that came to me naturally.
Getting It On-Screen
I took the thumbnail that worked the best and began using Illustrator to arrange the composition how I wanted it. Afterwards, I used textures and photos to make the poster come to life.
Animating It
After finishing the poster, I brought it to life with animation. I created a frame-by-frame animation in photoshop where the sun rises, the tree roots grow into the frame and a small flower falls from the tree. This was a fun addition to the Japanese Greenery Day poster.
